MaineHealth Stephens Hospital in the US has announced an investment for the expansion of its facilities, as well as a renovation project set to launch later this year.

The hospital’s investment reflects its focus on delivering health care with a patient-centred approach.

MaineHealth has approved the project, which covers several key departments, including surgical services, IV therapy, the emergency department (ED), and the family birth centre.

The enhancements will increase capacity, update infrastructure, and aim to provide a better overall experience for patients.

With support from Senator Susan Collins, who advocates for rural health care, the hospital has applied for Congressionally Directed Spending funds to help finance the project.

In response to growing patient volumes, the emergency department will expand and modernise to add more rooms for patients and reduce the use of hallway beds. The upgrade will also introduce a secure space for behavioural health treatment.

The IV therapy department, which provides specialised treatments, will see an expanded treatment space with semi-private chairs and a dedicated bathroom for improved privacy and convenience. The renovation will also include a staff break area within the suite.

Surgical care will benefit from the relocation of the endoscopy suite, which will free up space for expanded facilities and improve delivery of care. The project will further integrate pre-operative and post-operative services for a better patient experience.

The family birth centre will receive functional improvements designed to support families with newborns. These upgrades will also improve nursery access for specialised teams caring for infants who require advanced care.

MaineHealth Stephens Hospital president Jeff Noblin said: “For the last several years, Stephens has been growing, adding services, and expanding our geographic footprint. This expansion and renovation on our main campus will help us accommodate additional growth and help us plan for the future.”
