The MetroHealth System has partnered with Pieces Technologies to integrate AI-powered tools into its clinical workflows, aiming to improve patient care and save clinicians' time.

Pieces' AI platform will be deployed across MetroHealth's inpatient and outpatient settings, interfacing with the existing electronic health record system.

MetroHealth interim executive vice-president and chief operating officer R Douglas Bruce said: “Pieces’ AI-powered solutions will help MetroHealth enhance patient care and improve access by reducing inefficiencies and eliminating time-consuming administrative tasks, allowing our talented caregivers to work at the top of their licenses and provide more personalised care to more patients.”

Supported by multiple patents and a human-in-the-loop review process, the Pieces Inpatient Platform has produced over ten million clinician-ready documents for health systems across the US.

Its Working Summaries offer care teams concise snapshots of patient data, streamlining their access to critical information.

At MetroHealth, these AI features will enhance various clinical documentation processes, including progress notes, utilisation-management reviews, and discharge barriers.

The health system will also introduce the Pieces Ambulatory Platform to generate lifetime patient summaries, providing a longitudinal view to clinicians across encounters and settings.

Pieces Technologies CEO Ruben Amarasingham said: “Devoted to hope, health, and humanity. That is MetroHealth’s mission. We hope that, across the enterprise, Pieces helps lighten the load.”

Clinicians are expected to save significant time daily, with physicians saving up to 50 minutes and case managers around 60 minutes with the Pieces Inpatient Platform.

The platform's contextual modelling, human-in-the-loop supervision, and clinical prompt engineering ensure the delivery of safe and accurate tools for complex healthcare tasks.

In addition to workflow improvements, MetroHealth and Pieces are collaborating on research to utilise conversational AI in cancer care, under a contract with the National Cancer Institute and National Institutes of Health.
