Australia's New South Wales (NSW) Government has revealed updated designs for the A$263.8m ($169.8m) redevelopment of Grafton Base Hospital.

The project aims to deliver improved healthcare access and services in NSW's Northern Rivers region.

Plans include the integration of new and existing buildings while preserving the hospital’s historical character.

A new three-storey building will be constructed to house several key departments, including a new emergency department, medical imaging, MRI services, and an inpatient unit.

Space has also been allocated for future relocation of maternity services and potential development.

Located on the north-east of the campus, the new inpatient building will connect to the existing hospital.

A new hospital street will link the current main entrance with the new lobby to improve internal access.

The design includes native plantings, symbolic pathways, and a ceremonial area outside the Aboriginal Health Unit.

A welcoming forecourt will provide improved outdoor spaces for patients, staff, and visitors.

Construction timelines will be finalised following planning approval and appointment of the main builder.

Early works are already underway at the old Grafton Gaol site to refurbish two administration buildings.

These refurbished spaces will support hospital staff with updated offices and training facilities.

Clinical services will continue to operate at the existing Grafton Base Hospital site during the redevelopment.
