US-based Riverside Health announced that Riverside Smithfield Hospital (RSH) has been granted its Certificate of Occupancy, marking the end of construction and the start of final operational preparations ahead of a planned January 2026 opening.

The hospital will provide ten intensive care unit beds, 34 medical/surgical beds, a 14-room emergency department featuring a trauma bay and rapid triage, two procedure suites, four operating theatres, and comprehensive diagnostic imaging and laboratory services.

These facilities are designed to integrate with specialist care at the nearby Jamison-Longford Medical Office Building and throughout the Isle of Wight community in Virginia, US.

Riverside Smithfield Hospital president Jessica Macalino said: “This milestone is the result of years of hard work, vision, and partnership.

“From the approval of our Certificate of Public Need to receiving our Certificate of Occupancy, every step has been driven by one goal—serving the people of this region.

“The incredible work of our construction partners, engineers, and project teams brought that vision to life—on time and with excellence. This is truly the community’s hospital. Because of them, we’re here.

“And we are honoured to move one step closer to opening our doors and delivering the care they deserve, right here at home.”

With the Certificate of Occupancy secured, the hospital enters its final phase of preparation. This involves onboarding clinical and support staff, installing medical equipment, conducting mock-code safety drills, and completing licensing and accreditation inspections.
