US-based healthcare network RWJBarnabas Health has purchased MamaAnne, an advanced full birthing simulation mannequin, for its Institute for Nursing Excellence.

The technology is intended to enhance the training of nurses, physicians, and labour and delivery clinical care teams by allowing them to practice a wide range of labour and delivery scenarios.

These include both routine childbirth and complex emergencies such as breech births, postpartum haemorrhage and neonatal resuscitation.

The mannequin's lifelike anatomy and functionality are designed to increase the team's ability to deliver safe, quality care.

RWJBarnabas Health executive vice-president and chief nursing officer Nancy Holecek said: “This is a one-of-a-kind addition for The Institute, and to acquire this state-of-the-art technology represents a significant milestone in our commitment to nursing excellence.

“By providing our nurses with realistic, hands-on experiences in a controlled and supportive environment, we are preparing our nurses to respond confidently and competently to possible real-live clinical challenges during labour and delivery.”

MamaAnne's high-fidelity design offers unique features such as a belly-latch system, accessible fluid reservoirs and limb connectors, which enable quick preparation and smooth transitions between training sessions.

The mannequin is also designed to promote interprofessional collaboration and enable nurses to train alongside medical professionals and educators.

This collaborative environment is crucial for developing the communication and decision-making skills necessary for positive patient outcomes, especially in high-pressure situations.

Simulation-based education is increasingly being recognised by regulatory agencies and professional organisations as an essential method for hands-on learning.

RWJBarnabas Health Institute for Nursing Excellence senior vice-president Dr Mary Beth Russell said: “The addition of this advanced technology aligns with The Institute’s purpose to lead innovation in nursing education across the system by integrating simulation-based learning into its curriculum.

“The Institute is equipping its nurses with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to excel in today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.”
