UPMC’s Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh has announced plans to construct a new heart institute in Lawrenceville, with an estimated cost of $62m, reported post-gazette.com.
The proposed three-storey, 50,000ft² building will be situated on top of the hospital’s existing parking garage on 45th Street.

In contrast to the initial plan outlined in the 2013 Institutional Master Plan of UPMC for a 180,000ft² facility, the proposed new building will be significantly smaller in size.
The institute aims to consolidate and enhance the hospital’s cardiology programme, meeting the growing demand for its services and improving the patient experience.
Additionally, UPMC plans to recruit more cardiologists and provide additional space for patients.

The project, which will involve partnerships with HGA Architects and Engineers and Rycon Construction, is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions in the area due to construction activities, including the use of a large crane and the closure of one lane of 45th Street for up to a year.
UPMC intends to seek approval from the Pittsburgh Planning Commission and aims to complete construction by the end of 2025.
