UK-based medical 3D printing provider Replica 3DM deployed Stratasys 3D printers in 12 National Health Service (NHS) hospitals to support the validation of patient surgery prior to an operation.

The use of the printers is believed to help reduce surgical procedure times, which in turn could lead to an overall decrease in theatre costs, according to Stratasys.
Stratasys Objet24 and Objet30 Pro 3D printers will help in converting patient CT scans into physical 3D printed models for use as surgical guides to test implants for size and fit pre-surgery.
Brazilian hospital and MD Anderson partner to tackle cancer
Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein (HIAE), a 489-bed hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, partnered with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in a bid to address the cancer burden in Brazil.
The partnership, MD Anderson's first in Latin America, will enable HIAE to make use of the practices, education, research and treatment protocols developed at MD Anderson.

Tenet Healthcare acquires Emanuel Medical Center in US
US-based healthcare services provider Tenet Healthcare, through a subsidiary, acquired the 209-bed Emanuel Medical Center (EMC) in Turlock, California.
Acquired from the Covenant Ministries of Benevolence, EMC will complement the healthcare services provided by two existing Tenet hospitals in the region, Doctors Medical Center of Modesto and Doctors Hospital of Manteca.
The three hospitals will enable Tenet to enhance the efficiency and coordination of healthcare delivery in local communities.
Additionally, the acquisition will allow Tenet to improve its services in the Central Valley with the addition of the Emanuel Cancer Center. It includes a partnership with Stanford Hospital and Clinics to provide radiation oncology services, five family practice and speciality clinics, and a joint venture interest in a free-standing imaging facility.
Tenet has appointed Susan Micheletti as EMC's new chief executive officer.
SimPrints secures funds to develop fingerprint scanner for patient identification
UK tech start-up SimPrints secured funding from the Saving Lives at Birth Grand Challenge to develop a mobile biometric scanner to maintain health records.
The scanner and software enables real-time identification and access to patient records through fingerprints.
Suitable for integration with any mobile health (mHealth) application, the scanner is designed to address problems such as misidentification caused by common community names and unknown dates of birth. It also eliminates the need to maintain hard copies of health records.
The company is partnering with the Johns Hopkins University Global mHealth Initiative and NGO BRAC to conduct a pilot study of the scanner in Bangladesh.

US-based healthcare providers UnitedHealthcare, Centura Health and Colorado Health Neighborhoods partnered to enhance patient care in Colorado.
The collaboration will enable nearly 17,000 participants enrolled in UnitedHealthcare's employer-sponsored health plan, to benefit from improved care coordination and better health services through Colorado Health Neighborhoods.

Hackers reportedly used Heartbleed internet vulnerability to hack into the database of US-based hospitals group Community Health Systems.
Information security firm TrustedSec said that the attackers used the bug in equipment made by Juniper to log into the computer system of the hospital.
TrustedSec said in a blog post that confirmation of the initial attack vector was obtained from a trusted and anonymous source close to the CHS investigation.
CHS said on Monday that its computer network was hacked in April and June by an 'advanced persistent threat' group believed to orginate from China.
US hospital upgrades CR-based rooms with Agfa HealthCare's DR systems
US-based teaching hospital Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) upgraded its computed radiography (CR) based rooms with the installation of 11 DX-D Retrofit digital radiography (DR) systems and five wireless DX-D 100 mobile DR systems, designed by Agfa HealthCare.
The DR systems have been designed to increase efficiency within the radiology department by providing instant image review, while eliminating the need for time-consuming processing of medical screen film cassettes.
According to Agfa HealthCar, the new DR systems generate digital X-ray images that can be shared and accessed within the patient's electronic health record (EHR).
Sparrow Clinton Hospital in US to open new emergency services facility
Sparrow Clinton Hospital in Clinton County, Michigan, US, cut the ribbon on a new 9,935ft² emergency services facility.
The $5.7m facility is three times bigger than the previous emergency department, and is expected to serve more than 14,000 patients a year. The facility will be opened on 6 August 2014.
The facility features eight private rooms, two trauma treatment rooms, an exclusive lobby, a family conference room, an observation room, a centralised nursing station and a decontamination treatment area.
