The total number of artificial intelligence-related grants rose by 2% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.

Notably, the number of artificial intelligence-related patent applications in the healthcare industry was 1,314 in Q3 2022, versus 2,072 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 9% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Koninklijke Philips filed the most artificial intelligence patents within the healthcare industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 32 artificial intelligence-related patents in the quarter, compared with 39 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Medtronic with 24 artificial intelligence patent filings, Ping An Insurance (Group)of China Ltd (22 filings), and Siemens (21 filings) in Q3 2022.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 35% share of total patent filings

The largest share of artificial intelligence related patent filings in the healthcare industry in Q3 2022 was in the US with 35%, followed by China (19%) and South Korea (13%). The share represented by the US was 4% higher than the 31% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
