Notably, the number of internet of things-related patent applications in the healthcare industry was 1,114 in Q4 2023, versus 1,533 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 13% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Samsung Group filed the most internet of things patents within the healthcare industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 42 internet of things-related patents in the quarter, compared with 37 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Medtronic with 42 internet of things patent filings, DexCom (28 filings), and Apple (18 filings) in Q4 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 45% share of total patent filings

The largest share of internet of things related patent filings in the healthcare industry in Q4 2023 was in the US with 45%, followed by Japan (8%) and China (7%). The share represented by the US was 7% higher than the 38% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
