US-based University of Kansas Hospital (KU Med) has broken ground on a new facility, which is being constructed to meet demand in various growing areas.
Located at 39th and Cambridge streets in Kansas City, the Cambridge North Patient Tower is being developed northeast of existing hospital buildings with an investment of $280m.
University of Kansas Hospital president Bob Page said: "We have had a full hospital with record patient demand for the last three months.
"It has meant we are using all our creativity to provide patients with the high quality services they are seeking. It also means we need the beds and operating rooms Cambridge North will provide to meet patient demand."
The seven-storey facility will include 92 beds, 12 operating rooms, serving the needs of growing specialty areas such as neurosciences and surgical oncology, including ear, nose and throat cancers.
The building, which will include 28 intensive care beds, will also feature a lab, pharmacy and imaging. The new facility is expected to commence operations in 2017.
