North Carolina Children’s Health (NC Children’s) in the US has announced the town of Apex as the site for its new campus, which will house the only independent, freestanding hospital in the Carolinas.

NC Children’s, a collaborative effort between Duke Health and UNC Health, will span around 230 acres at the strategic junction of US-1 and NC-540.

UNC Health CEO Dr Wesley Burks said: “This campus will create a brighter, healthier future for generations of children and adolescents across North Carolina and the Southeast, and we’re thrilled to have Apex as our home and partner.”

The campus, once completed, will have a 500-bed hospital dedicated to children’s healthcare, an outpatient care centre, 103 beds for children and adolescent behavioural health.

Supported by the UNC and Duke schools of medicine, the campus will house a research and education enterprise.

It is also expected to generate around 8,000 jobs in Apex and Wake County.

Apex mayor Jacques Gilbert said: “This transformational project will bring new jobs – not only strengthening our economy, but creating opportunities for people to be part of something greater: a space where hope, healing, and compassionate care come together for countless families.”

The NC Children’s campus will be a part of Veridea, a mixed-use community.

Exceeding 1,000 acres, the RXR-developed community is set to include 8,000 new homes, 3.5 million square feet of retail and dining space, 12 million square feet of office and research area, and a new campus for Wake Tech Community College.

As a next step in the project’s development, the NC Children’s team is inviting design and construction contractors to submit their qualifications.

The ground-breaking is planned for 2027, with construction estimated to take around six years.
