BJ Medical College (BJMC) and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) have announced plans to establish a 250-bed Super Speciality Hospital and Post Graduate Institute in Pune, India.

The medical education department received the proposal for establishing this facility, as reported by Hindustan Times citing officials.

The facility is proposed to be set up on the SGH campus, encompassing an area of 3.1 million square feet within a 16-storey building.

BJMC and SGH dean Dr Eknath Pawar stated that the new hospital would feature various specialities, including nephrology, urology, neurology and gastroenterology, with each department housing 20 to 30 beds.

The funding for the project is expected to be a joint effort by the central and state governments.

Pawar said: “The departments like neurosurgery, cardio-thoracic surgery, plastic surgery and paediatric surgery are functioning at full fledge and have around 20 to 30 beds. However, after the Super Specialty Hospital is set up, we will double the bed capacity of the existing specialities running at full fledge.” 

BJMC and SGH currently have a combined 1,293-bed capacity, which has been increased to 1,700 beds.

SGH is equipped with 140 ICU beds across various departments, sees a daily footfall of 2,500 to 3,000 patients in its outpatient department and performs around 500 minor and major procedures.

SGH medical superintendent Dr Yallapa Jadhav said: “The hospital has 100 blocks for different departments and 25 medical speciality departments.”

The expansion is a response to the bed shortage, particularly in ICU units, especially as patients from Pune and surrounding districts such as Satara, Ahilyadevi Nagar, Solapur and Sangli rely on the hospital for treatment.
