Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) is set to commence final phase of preparations for the opening of the new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH) in Grimsby, Canada, after taking formal ownership.

The new facility will have 55 single-patient rooms, alongside six birthing suites, and a footprint that is 80% larger than the current site.

WLMH Women’s and Children’s Health vice-president and site executive Bruce Squires said: “This project is a major investment in the health of the West Niagara region.

“We are deeply grateful to the West Niagara community, all levels of government, and our health and community partners for their support. Together, we have built a new hospital that will serve the region for generations to come.”

The initial activities will be in accordance with the Ministry of Health's post-construction planning process, with the hospital anticipated to begin admitting patients on or around 24 November 2025.

Sustainable design features include rooftop solar panels, EV charging stations, LEED Silver certification, and the planting of over 115 new trees on the premises.

Ontario Deputy Premier and Health Minister Sylvia Jones said: “Our government is making historic investments to protect Ontario’s health-care system, ensuring that more people can connect to the care they need, where and when they need it.

“We are excited to mark the completion of this new state-of-the-art hospital, building vital capacity for the Niagara region and ensuring more families can access the right care, in the right place, for generations to come.”

The project aims to meet current and future care needs by prioritising patient experience, staff support, and environmental sustainability.

HHS plans to communicate further information, encompassing official opening events, programme and service locations, among others, in the upcoming weeks and months.
