The Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) redevelopment in Ontario, Canada, has advanced, with construction company Pomerleau selecting Abitibi Connex to support this project.
Pomerleau has entrusted Abitibi Connex with the coordination of construction materials for the C$1.8bn ($1.32bn) project.
This collaboration is supported by over-dimensional logistics management company Pinnacle Logistics Solutions.
The project, which will enhance medical services for residents along the James Bay and Hudson Bay coasts, includes the construction of a new hospital in Moosonee and an ambulatory care centre in Moose Factory.
Moosonee hospital is set to feature a 32-bed long-term Elder Care Lodge, 36 private inpatient beds, a 24-hour emergency department, surgical suites, and additional facilities.
The ambulatory care centre in Moose Factory will focus on offering culturally appropriate care.
Material transfers for the project started this month, facilitated by Pomerleau and Pinnacle Logistics Solutions.
The materials are being transported through a redeveloped site, formerly a paper mill. Ontario Northland Rail is upgrading an 11.5km rail spur to improve connectivity.
The partnership between Pomerleau and Abitibi Connex is crucial for delivering essential healthcare infrastructure to the remote regions of northern Ontario.
Approximately 3,000 rail cars will be managed through Abitibi Connex over three years, with the operation expected to create nearly 120 jobs at the peak of construction.
Pinnacle Logistics Solutions principal and general manager Frank Devries said: “This partnership demonstrates the complex logistics coordination needed for major northern development, and the success partnerships like this bring to them.”
The redevelopment will result in healthcare facilities that provide acute, emergency, and speciality healthcare, with project completion anticipated in 2030.
The development of the Abitibi Connex site is a collaborative effort involving the Town of Iroquois Falls, as well as J L Richards & Associates, who have contributed to the master planning of the former mill and adjacent areas.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the launch of Abitibi Connex is scheduled for 25 July 2025.
