The upgraded facility will have a capacity to accommodate 30 patients at a time, a substantial increase from the existing 14.
In addition, the ED will be equipped to handle four ambulances simultaneously, doubling the current capacity.
The inclusion of two triage spaces, a resuscitation/trauma area, two virtual-care exam rooms, and a waiting area for children is among the planned improvements.
Furthermore, the department will feature mental health facilities and a specialised ear-nose-throat exam room.

By GlobalDataYarmouth Regional Hospital site medical lead Dr Joe Gillis said: “Our emergency department team, our patients and our community have been looking forward to work getting started on the Yarmouth Regional Hospital emergency department redevelopment.
“We will be excited to see boots on the ground and work happening. We are confident it will ultimately allow for better care in a more spacious, modern environment, resulting in an enhanced patient and provider experience.”
Despite the construction activity, the hospital will continue to operate all services as usual.
The government said that any disruptions, including changes to parking and patient drop-off/pickup areas, will be kept to a minimum.
Yarmouth MLA Nick Hilton, on behalf of Public Works Minister Fred Tilley, said: “Investing in healthcare infrastructure is how we support the healthcare needs of our growing population and recruit and retain the best and brightest healthcare professionals to our communities.
“A new, modern and larger emergency department will improve care for Nova Scotians in Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby counties.”
PCL Constructors Canada has been selected to carry out the construction, winning the C$77.8m ($56.17m) tender through a competitive bidding process.
The total cost of the project will be disclosed upon its completion, with the new facility expected to open its doors in 2027.
