Officially launched by Dr Koh Poh Koon, senior minister of state for health and manpower, the relocation streamlines collaboration across clinical and allied health teams, improving accessibility and synchronised care.

This facility upgrade is part of NUH’s wider redevelopment initiative to modernise infrastructure and address increasing healthcare needs in Singapore’s western region.

The Orthopaedic Surgery Centre focuses on conditions such as sports injuries and degenerative joint diseases, including osteoarthritis, affecting a significant portion of the population, particularly those aged over 60.

It also provides advanced treatments, including Singapore’s first stem cell therapy for cartilage repair, led by NUH orthopaedic surgery head and senior consultant professor James Hui.

New procedure rooms and capabilities will support innovative therapies for quicker recoveries and fewer hospital stays.

Hui said: “The new Orthopaedic Surgery Centre is designed to more closely integrate our clinical teams, imaging and treatment facilities into one streamlined environment.

“With expanded capabilities also means richer data for research and innovation, which can accelerate the development of new therapies tailored to the evolving orthopaedic needs of our community.”

The Hand & Reconstructive Microsurgery Centre includes a day surgery suite with ultrasound and fluoroscopy, supporting early procedures.

It offers 24-hour microsurgical services for upper limb, hand and wrist diseases and trauma, and is a regional referral centre for limb replantation.

The Rehabilitation Centre integrates occupational therapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, and speech therapy for a seamless transition from surgery centres.

Facilities include an indoor running and mobility track and increased treatment capacity by more than 40% to reduce wait times for patients.

The centres are originally situated at the Main Building of NUH, and their relocation marks the first phase of NUH’s redevelopment plan.

In April 2024, NUH announced its plans to establish a new academic centre for digestive health, the ‘National University Centre for Digestive Health’.
