DHR Health will invest $17.3m in the project, further broadening its presence in Brownsville and supporting new access points for emergency and specialty care.

The expansion aligns with ongoing city efforts to support economic development, employment opportunities, and improve healthcare access for local residents.

The project will add six new surgical suites, six emergency room (ER) bays, an expanded ER waiting area, installation of a Siemens 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), two cardiac catheterisation labs, expanded radiology services, and a dual source computed tomography (CT) scanner.

It will create 20 new full-time jobs for medical professionals and support staff.

Construction will begin after permit approvals and is anticipated to conclude in two years. The city will incentivise DHR Health with a $2m grant under the Texas Chapter 380 Grant Agreement.

DHR Health board chairman Dr Carlos Cardenas said: “This partnership is proof that great things happen when we all come together in the best interest of our community. We are thankful that we will be able to further increase access to specialty healthcare services and elevate patient care.”

Brownsville City Mayor John Cowen, Jr said: “The DHR Brownsville expansion strengthens our healthcare services in our city and gives our healthcare professionals the opportunity to better serve patients with compassion and efficiency.
