Plenary Health secures $512m contract for Milton District expansion project in Canada
Plenary Health received a $512m contract from Canada’s Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) to design, build, finance and maintain the expansion project of Milton District Hospital.

Located in Ontario, the expansion project will add 330,000ft² of space to the existing 125,000ft² facility.
Construction on the project is scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of 2017 and will be opened for patients in the last quarter of 2017.
KU Med breaks ground on $280m expansion facility in US
US-based University of Kansas Hospital (KU Med) broke ground on a new facility, which is being constructed to meet demand in various growing areas.
Located at 39th and Cambridge streets in Kansas City, the Cambridge North Patient Tower is being developed northeast of existing hospital buildings with an investment of $280m.

World Bank grants $214m fund for Ukrainian health sector
The World Bank granted a $214.73m loan for Ukraine’s Serving People, Improving Health Project, in a bid to help implement reforms and improve services in the health sector.
As part of a five-year project, the funds will be used to develop medical infrastructure and improve the quality of health services in eight regions across the country.
The investment will be used to introduce a new funding mechanism within hospitals and enhance primary and secondary prevention, early detection, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
EIB grants £109m fund to new Dumfries hospital in Scotland
The European Investment Bank (EIB) granted a £109m fund to build a new District and General Hospital in Dumfries, Scotland.
The 26-year loan from EIB will cover half of the project cost. It is the second new hospital in Scotland to be supported by the long-term lending institution, after sanctioning a £83m fund for the new Royal Hospital for Sick Children in February.
The new Dumfries hospital will provide services to 150,000 people in the south-west of Scotland. It will replace the outdated current hospital and commence operations in 2018.
UCHealth to construct new $100m hospital in Longmont, US
University of Colorado Health (UCHealth) unveiled plans to construct a new hospital in Longmont, US, with an investment between $100m and $125m.
The group intends to break ground on the new facility this year, with a projected opening in late 2016 or early 2017.
UCHealth’s new hospital will include 75 inpatient beds, an intensive care unit, operating rooms and an emergency department. The facility will also comprise advanced cardiology services and a birth centre, according to UCHealth.
US-based Mercy Hospital Joplin to open on 22 March
US-based Mercy Hospital Joplin plans to officially open on 22 March, which replaces the former St John’s Mercy Regional Medical Centre in Joplin, Missouri, US.
Builder McCarthy Building Companies, architectural firms HKS, and Archimages and MEP Engineer Heideman & Associates worked together to complete the 205-private room hospital that involved an investment of $465m.
The facility was destroyed by the EF-5 tornado, which is said to be the deadliest cyclone in the US since 1947.
Philips and Mount Sinai to create new digital pathology database
Netherlands’ Royal Philips partnered with US-based Mount Sinai Health System to create a new digital pathology database and analytics.
Under the deal, both organisations will jointly work to create a modern digital image repository of patient tissue samples and innovative data analytics to develop tissue-based tests and unlock pathology data.
The partnership intends to advance clinical research in a bid to provide solutions for complex diseases, including cancer.
The Mount Sinai Health System includes seven hospital campuses, providing services to 170,000 inpatients and 2.6 million outpatients annually.
Varian installs TrueBeam STx system at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital
Singapore-based Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital installed Varian Medical Systems’ TrueBeam STx system to treat cancer.
Located in Novena, Parkway Pantai Group’s hospital will use the system for radiotherapy and radiosurgery to treat cancer patients.
Varian developed the system to advance treatment of lung, breast, intracranial, prostate, head and neck, and other types of cancer.
The system integrates multiple technical innovations, which dynamically synchronise advanced imaging, patient positioning, motion management, and treatment delivery during a radiotherapy or radiosurgery procedure to target tumours precisely.
