The Palmerston Regional Hospital has formally opened its doors to patients in Holtze in Northern Territory of Australia.

The Northern Territory’s first new public hospital in almost 40 years has been built with an investment of A$170m ($124m).

The new 116-bed hospital is jointly funded by the Australian (A$110m) and Northern Territory governments (A$60m).

The public hospital will function round the clock and will offer a range of healthcare services, including emergency department, radiology and pharmacy services.

Earlier in June, Northern Territory Minister for Health Natasha Fyles visited the hospital to inspect new menu items particularly designed for future patients.

Fyles said: “The new hospital will create 300 new health roles, and so far 73% of positions are filled. 188 positions will have commenced by the end of this month.

“Territorians want and deserve access to high quality health services and in one month’s time the first new hospital in 40 years will be open for Palmerston and rural Darwin residents in August when it is clinically safe.”

Additionally, the hospital will serve as the NT’s centre of excellence for rehabilitative care and deliver improved access to older people who need complex rehabilitative care.

Furthermore, the hospital will offer better access to maternity services closer to home. Besides providing antenatal and postnatal care, the facility will also deliver outpatient clinics, medical imaging including CT scanning, and telehealth care for rural patients.

Lend Lease, an Australian construction, property and infrastructure company, served as the managing contractor for the construction of the Palmerston Regional Hospital.
