A 500-bed hospital building has been inaugurated at the Government Medical College, Dindigul, located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, reported The Hindu.

The facility has been inaugurated by the state’s rural development minister and health minister along with other officials.

Established in 1955, the Government Medical College Hospital has served as the district headquarters hospital for the region.

Besides the inauguration of the hospital building, three new buildings established at a cost of Rs 95 lakh ($115,589) were inaugurated.

These include the new building the Primary Health Centre at Ammapatti, nurses’ quarters at PHC in K. Pudukottai and a Block Health unit building at PHC in Ammayanaickanur.

Tamil Nadu health minister Ma Subramanian said: “Apart from Dindigul, similar 500-bedded facilities would become functional within ten days in Ramanathapuram and Tirupur.

“Later, such facilities will also be opened in Namakkal, Nagapattinam and Ooty. We are doing our best to complete building work at all the 11 new medical colleges and have them fully functional at the earliest [time].”

Construction is underway for a paediatric intense care unit (ICU) at Kodaikanal General Hospital, valued at Rs 30 lakh ($36,501), as well as a 50-bed ICU facility in Oddanchatram GH valued at Rs 24 crore ($2.9m), reported the Times of India.

Furthermore, a new hospital building will be established at Athoor GH at a cost of Rs 90 lakh ($109,498), the report further stated.
