University of California, Irvine, and UCI Health have stated the construction of a $1.3bn medical complex at the north end of the Irvine campus.

The new medical facility in California was approved by the UC Board of Regents in January.

The medical complex will include a 144-bed acute care hospital with an emergency room as well as an outpatient Center for Advanced Care for primary and specialty health services.

It will also include a Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building and a Center for Children’s Health.

Covering a 168,000ft2 area, UCI Health Center for Advanced Care will provide adult primary and specialty care services. It will also feature laboratory and radiology facilities.

The 225,000ft2 Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care facility will provide cancer care, while the Center for Children’s Health will offer paediatric outpatient services.

UCI Health CEO Chad T Lefteris said: “UCI Health is building the next chapter of healthcare in Orange County.

“The new UCI Medical Center — Irvine will be a full-service academic medical complex, bringing a broad range of the most advanced healthcare services to coastal and southern Orange County, including access to the hundreds of clinical trials underway at UCI Health.”

During the construction phase, the project is expected to create thousands of construction jobs. It will also generate thousands of new healthcare jobs upon completion.

The outpatient Center for Advanced Care and Center for Children’s Health is expected to become operational in early 2023, while the hospital and cancer centre will open in 2025.

Once opened, the 350,000ft2 medical complex will connect with UCI Health primary care network across Orange County.

It will also serve as the hub for participation in Orange County’s largest clinical trials portfolio, which includes early-phase trials in cancer, neurosciences, stem cell-derived treatments, internal medicine and more.
