Demolition work has commenced at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, Lincolnshire, UK, to make way for a new multi-million-pound emergency department.

Some hospital services have been relocated to facilitate the demolition of the H-block building adjacent to the existing emergency department and enable its two-level extension.

The Urgent Treatment Centre has now been moved to the ground floor of the Outpatients Department.

Other departments such as the Royle Eye Department, as well as maxillofacial and oral surgery teams, have been relocated to the former Maternity Block.

The hospital’s bus stop and non-emergency ambulance bays have also been relocated.

This new emergency unit is expected to be over three times larger than the existing one, with more treatment cubicles, a larger resuscitation zone, dedicated facilities for paediatric emergency care, and additional training rooms for staff.

The transformation is said to incorporate infection prevention measures.

United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust CEO Andrew Morgan said: “Patients and visitors will soon start to see real progress in our work to create our new Emergency Department at Pilgrim Hospital as we move into the demolition and construction stages.

“I would like to thank all of our teams for their support in relocating into the new areas that have been created for them.

“None of this would have been possible without their support and that of all of our partner organisations.

“By working together, we are going to give our patients and staff the first-class Emergency Department that they need and deserve for the future.”
