Fraser Health and EllisDon have signed a design and construction agreement for the next phase of the Royal Columbian Hospital redevelopment project in British Columbia, Canada.

While demolition of older buildings is underway, construction teams are preparing for geotechnical, design, pre-construction and abatement work. Excavation has also begun for an interim support building for the hospital’s support services to stay.

Minister of Health Adrian Dix said: “This next important step in the redevelopment project ensures that the region’s fast-growing population is closer to accessing an expanded and upgraded Royal Columbian Hospital. The hospital is the oldest and one of the busiest in B.C., and our government is committed to making sure people can access the health-care services they need in a state-of-the-art facility.”

The redevelopment of Royal Columbian Hospital has been planned in three phases.

Fraser Health president and CEO Dr. Victoria Lee said: “We are pleased to mark this important milestone with the signing of the design build and construction management agreements, enabling us to take next steps forward in phases two and three of the Royal Columbian redevelopment project.

“Royal Columbian Hospital plays an integral role in our regional hospital network, ensuring people in our region have access to care for a wide range of health concerns. This project will ensure lifesaving services are available to people from across our region now and for many years to come.”

Phase one saw the construction of a 75-bed Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Centre, unveiled in mid-2020.

Phase two will witness the construction of a new acute care tower comprising extra beds for the maternity ward, intensive care, cardiac intensive care, medicine and surgical patients and more maternity operating rooms.

The tower will also house a larger emergency department and four more operating rooms, apart from a rooftop helipad.

Phase three, which will entail expansion and upgrades in the existing Health Care Centre and Columbia Tower, is expected to begin in 2023.
