The University of Kentucky (UK) in the US has initiated construction on the new ‘UK Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Building’, designed to centralise and enhance cancer care services.
Located across from UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital, the 550,000ft² building will house the UK Markey Cancer Center, which is claimed to be Kentucky’s sole National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The new facility aims to streamline the patient experience by offering a wide range of cancer care services, such as urgent care, rehabilitation, palliative care, imaging, pharmacy, and other lab services.
The UK Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Building will consolidate Markey’s outpatient services, currently spread across six locations on the UK Chandler Hospital campus.
This integration will bring all of Markey’s outpatient services, such as gynaecologic oncology, chemotherapy infusion, haematology/bone marrow transplant, and breast care centre, under one roof.
The effort will further improve patient convenience and promote collaboration among clinicians and researchers.

By GlobalDataIn addition, the centre will have dedicated space for Markey’s Cellular Therapy Program and Precision Medicine Clinic, offering early phase clinical trials for treating adults with cancer.
Besides, the building will host a new Comprehensive Spine Center, fostering a transdisciplinary approach with services from orthopaedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurosurgery, and anaesthesiology.
The facility will also dedicate a floor to ambulatory surgery and procedural space, including eight operating rooms.
Expected to be completed in 2027, the UK Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Building project’s planning and design was approved by the UK Board of Trustees in May 2021.
Walsh Construction, Champlin Architecture, and HGA Architects and Engineers were selected as project partners.
The building’s design, influenced by patient input, features natural light, green spaces, and wellness areas.
It also includes shelled space for future expansion, reflecting UK HealthCare’s commitment to adapting to the growing needs of cancer patients.
The construction is funded by UK HealthCare, with state and private funds supporting Markey programmes within the new building.
UK Markey Cancer Center director B Mark Evers said: “This facility will enable our talented clinicians and researchers to work together like never before, accelerating innovations that will directly translate into better outcomes for our patients.”
