Health First has initiated construction on a new $410m hospital complex on Merritt Island, Florida, US, with a groundbreaking ceremony, marking the beginning of the project.

The new facility is set to open in early 2027 and will replace the existing Cape Canaveral Hospital located in Cocoa Beach.

The existing hospital, a seven-storey building with 150 beds, employs approximately 650 staff members and 105 volunteers, offering over 50 medical specialities, such as cardiology and radiology.

Space Coast Daily quoted Health First board chair Kent Smith as saying: “This new project has been in the works for a long time and it truly speaks to Health First’s vision, mission, and strategy to set our community up for success today and beyond. We are focused on caring for the exact needs of our community, and this moment reminds us of that.”

The upcoming hospital complex, spanning a 14-acre site at 255 Borman Drive, will feature a 268,000ft² hospital with 120 private inpatient beds, 25 treatment rooms for the emergency department, and six operating rooms.

At five stories high, the hospital aims to maintain the current staffing level of approximately 650 employees.

The facility construction is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2026.

In addition to the hospital, the site will include a three-storey, 92,000ft² medical office building, whose construction is also expected to be complete by late 2026.

This building will start serving the community concurrently with the new Cape Canaveral Hospital.

The campus is also set to offer ample parking, with 533 covered spaces in a three-deck parking garage and an additional 296 paved surface spots.

The hospital will be constructed to withstand a Category 4 hurricane. The site’s elevation 13ft above sea level is intended to protect against storm surges.

Partners in the project include architect Lawrence Group, project management and consultancy firm Concord Group, engineering services provider BCER, and Gilbane for the construction work.
