Skanska USA, a part of Sweden-based construction contractor Skanska™, has signed a contract amendment with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) for its hospital expansion project in Portland, Oregon.

The value of the contract amendment is $111m, which will be recorded by the company in its order book for Q1 2023.

The construction of the $650m, 538,000ft², 14-storey hospital expansion project began in June 2022 and is slated to open to patients in 2026.

This contract covers mechanical and electrical space to support hospital operations, patient floors, parking spaces, three pedestrian sky bridges that will link the new tower to the old structures, road upgrades, and a new multi-modal hub bus stop.

Last September, Skanska signed a contract amendment with OHSU for the hospital expansion project, reported RTT News.

This contract amendment was worth $63m.

Under last year’s contract, Skanska was responsible for the undertaking of early site and foundation work and procurement of long-lead equipment.

Completion of the construction under this amendment contract is scheduled for the end of June this year.

The expansion project will see the addition of 152 inpatient medical and surgical beds besides offering space for a further 32 beds, thereby boosting the hospital capacity by almost one-third.

Furthermore, this project will also increase the count of adult inpatient operating rooms from 25 to 31.

For the project, the OHSU board gave its approval for funding in 2019. However, the project could not proceed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
