US-based integrated health system UnityPoint Health and the federally designated Organ Procurement Organization (OPO), Iowa Donor Network (IDN), have joined forces to launch InVita Healthcare Technologies’ iReferral, a healthcare interoperability technology, across 13 UnityPoint Health hospital facilities in Iowa.
iReferral automates the identification of potential organ and tissue donors based on established criteria and delivers donor referrals to IDN’s iTransplant System.

The technology claims to replace the previous manual and time-consuming telephonic referral process.
This initiative ensures all potential organ and tissue donors are referred to the OPO, as mandated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
With over 100,000 patients on the national waitlist for life-saving organs, each donor can save up to eight lives through organ transplantation and enhance the lives of more than 75 others through tissue donation, according to InVita.
