TDM subsidiary Kumpulan Medic Iman (KMI Healthcare) has entered into a build-and-lease agreement with Bertam Specialist Hospital for constructing a new facility with 100 beds in Bertam, Penang, Malaysia.

The hospital will be situated on a 0.85ha site and is expected to fill a significant healthcare gap in the region, reported Bernama.

With a value estimated at MYR146m ($33m), it will be an approximately ten-minute drive from the Kepala Batas toll exit.

The company would lease the hospital from Bertam Specialist Hospital for an initial 18-year period, with the possibility of a 12 year extension.

The agreement also includes a clause that prevents Bertam Specialist Hospital from leasing nearby land to other hospital operators without the consent of KMI Bertam, which also holds an opportunity to purchase the hospital building and adjacent land under pre-agreed conditions, reported TMR.

KMI Healthcare CEO Dr Rayney Azmi Ali said: “Bertam is a strategic choice, with a population of 117,043, to be exact. Currently, the only healthcare establishment in this area is the government hospital, leaving a gap that KMI Healthcare is uniquely positioned to fill.

“With Penang Island becoming increasingly congested, we are providing patients with a new option to access medical services on the mainland.

“With advanced healthcare infrastructure, affordability, and cultural amenities, we are well-positioned to tap into this growing market and offer world-class medical services to international patients.”

The upcoming hospital is set to offer surgical and medical facilities, encompassing diagnostic services, centres of excellence, and patient-focused care units.

The construction is scheduled to commence this year, with the hospital’s opening anticipated for 2028.
