The Government of Namibia has commissioned a new 70-bed tented Covid-19 field hospital at Windhoek Central Hospital.

In response to the Covid-19 outbreak in the country, the new field hospital was built by collaborating with private sector with an investment of $268,628 (N$4m).

The Covid-19 field hospital was inaugurated by Namibia Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila.

Kuugongelwa-Amadhila was quoted by Namibia Economist as saying: “Government is busy constructing more isolation facilities across the country to make more beds available for Covid-19 patients.”

She further added that the opening of the new health facility is a welcome move, as the country’s health system is currently buckling under the pandemic wave.

Additionally, the Prime Minister applauded the Chamber of Commerce as it responded to the government’s call to assist in the fight against Covid-19.

Namibia Health Minister Kalumbi Shangula, who was also present at the opening event, explained that over the past three months, the nation has experienced the worst of the three waves of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Shangula said: “The government responded by increasing bed capacity throughout the country. The former building of the Namibia Institute of Pathology at Katutura Intermediate Hospital was re-purposed and converted into a 46-bed ward for Covid-19 patients.

“This is in addition to the 74-bed old TB Ward, the conversion of the 4A into a 64-bed ward, and the re-purposing of 5A into a 34-bed facility all at Katutura Intermediate Hospital.”

The health minister further added that works are also underway for a 98-bed ward at Katutura Hospital.

Last month, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in the Indian state of Maharashtra, constructed a 2170-bed hospital for Covid-19 patients and handed over to Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
