India-based Apollo Hospitals has partnered with French pharma giant Sanofi to improve access to treatment for people with diabetes.

For the first part of the collaboration, Sanofi will extend support to establish 50 Apollo Sugar clinics, both globally and in India.

Apollo Hospitals Group chairman Dr Prathap Reddy said: "Over the years, Apollo Hospitals has benchmarked global best practices in quality healthcare delivery with stringent alignment to approved standards and protocols.

"With the increasing burden of diabetes in our society, we need to act quickly and with a sense of purpose to arrest the disease from claiming more lives."

The Apollo Sugar Clinics will provide access to an integrated diabetes care solution within a clinical infrastructure, and helps in early detection and treatment of diabetes and associated complications.

Apollo Sugar will run as an associate of Apollo Health & Lifestyle, the arm of Apollo providing services in primary and secondary healthcare.

Apollo Sugar chairperson and Apollo Hospitals joint managing director Sangita Reddy said the diabetes patient has access to information, co-morbidities management, counselling, care and treatment at Apollo Sugar Clinics.

Nearly 382 million people are currently suffering from diabetes globally, with India alone accounting for more than 65 million people and 77.2 million individuals diagnosed as being pre-diabetic.

By 2035, the number of people with diabetes in India is expected to rise to 109 million.
