Connecticut hospital deploys Splunk software for regulatory compliance

Middlesex Hospital, a HIMSS Stage 6 hospital located in Middletown, Connecticut, has selected Splunk, a provider of software platforms for real-time operational intelligence, to meet HIPAA and HITECH standards throughout its hospital IT network and to secure its electronic healthcare records (EHR).

The hospital’s system includes three emergency departments and off-site primary care locations in addition to its main facility.

In 2013, the hospital also selected Splunk software to achieve global visibility and maintain optimal uptime performance on its Windows-based networked operating systems.

Splunk’s software and cloud services allow organisations to monitor and analyse big data from serves, networks, and mobile devices, and prevent fraud, improve service performances, and reduce the risk for cyber attacks.

The software aids compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, which enforce the protection of protected health information (PHI) contained in these systems.

"Splunk software immediately proved its value by helping us to transform IT operations and accomplish our top priorities at the hospital – protecting our patients’ privacy and ensuring regulatory compliance."

Recently, leveraging Splunk software, the hospital was able to review system activity, identify suspicious use, and conduct investigations into electronic PHI.

According to Middlesex Hospital, Splunk software helped to turn resolution times from hours or days to minutes or seconds – a critical turnaround given the importance of these systems.

Middlesex Hospital director of IT Richard Schubach said that Splunk software is a critical part of the hospital’s compliance initiatives in support of Meaningful Use Stage 2 requirements for the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programmes.

"It also helps the hospital save hundreds of thousands of dollars by eliminating unnecessary applications and technologies," Schubach added.

"Splunk software immediately proved its value by helping us to transform IT operations and accomplish our top priorities at the hospital – protecting our patients’ privacy and ensuring regulatory compliance."
