St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida, opened its new and expanded Steinbrenner Children’s Emergency/Trauma Center on 16 December 2013.

The new facility encompasses 24 private patient rooms and a kids-only lobby designed to provide comfort for children and their families.

The facility also features two trauma suites with advanced critical care equipment for paediatric patients; six ‘fast track’ rooms to treat patients with minor emergencies; in-room entertainment system; and child-friendly decorations like an interactive fish pond in the lobby floor.

In addition to its expert staff and sophisticated technology, the facility has been designed to make children comfortable and provide distraction during treatment.

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital emergency services manager Lorene Rice said the hospital’s physicians are specifically trained to care for paediatric emergencies.

"This means each child seen here is being evaluated by a specialist, trained to care for a child’s unique needs," Rice added.

The children’s emergency centre is reportedly the busiest in the region, and the larger, advanced facility will increase the community’s access to the highest level of paediatric emergency care.

"Each child seen here is being evaluated by a specialist, trained to care for a child’s unique needs."

The state-certified level II paediatric trauma referral centre treats more than 45,000 children each year and operates with a staff of physicians who are board-certified in paediatric emergency medicine.

The hospital has a team of paediatric specialists available round-the-clock in neurology, orthopaedics, urology and plastic surgery to cater to the needs of patients with multiple injuries.

In addition, the facility also provides child advocates to deliver education and safety items to families, and a neonatal/paediatric transport team to provide expedited transportation from other area hospitals.

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, the third largest children’s hospital in Florida, provides more acute medical and surgical paediatric care than all other hospitals in Hillsborough County.
