Wellington Hospital in New Zealand has deployed a TrueBeam device from Varian Medical Systems for radiotherapy treatments.

The new device is expected to expand the hospital’s portfolio of radiotherapy treatments, which includes intensity modulated radiotherapy, image-guided radiotherapy, RapidArc volumetric radiotherapy and stereotactic radiotherapy.

The TrueBeam platform for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery is a fully-integrated radiotherapy system designed from the ground up to treat a moving target with speed and precision, the company said.

The radiotherapy system features a high intensity mode for customising dose delivery based on a patient’s specific tumour characteristics.

Wellington Hospital is expected to treat 1,300 patients per year, providing external beam and high dose rate brachytherapy radiation treatments using Varian equipment and software.

Wellington radiation therapist team leader Jennifer de Ridder said that speed is a significant factor for those who are immobilised during treatment.

Varian regional director Chris Cowley added, "This hospital has made a clear commitment to offer its patients more advanced radiotherapy treatments while being mindful of the need to keep down waiting times."

TrueBeam, a linear accelerator, dynamically synchronises imaging, patient positioning, motion management and treatment delivery, the company said.

The New Zealand government has announced a target that all patients should commence radiotherapy within four weeks of a decision to treat, so as to manage waiting times.
