The University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) in the US is set to renovate the surgical suites at University Hospital (UH).

The $23.5m expansion project was approved by the University Board of Regents, as part of the hospital’s initiative to create surgical capacity for adults.

The investment will be used to add 24,500ft² within the surgical suite, which includes four new operating rooms that will meet the growing demand for surgical care.

In addition, the project includes development of support spaces for operating room equipment storage, offices and a new staff lounge.

"The result will be a better experience for patients and our care team."

UM Hospitals and Health Centres acting CEO Anthony Denton said: "This investment in adult operating room capacity will improve patient access and our overall ability to accommodate the growing number of patients who seek our care. The result will be a better experience for patients and our care team."

In order to support the expansion, the hospital’s specialised neurology clinics will be relocated to UH South, which is the former University of Michigan C S Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital.

The expansion is planned to complete by mid-2016, while UMHS need approvals from the state’s certificate of need commission before the renovation work can begin.

In July, UMHS opened Northville Health Centre, which expanded the facilities of outpatient care, and is planning for other capacity expansion to meet the growing demands.
