Baptist Health System, a US-based healthcare services provider, has unveiled the South Texas Lung Institute for the diagnosis and treatment of lung disease and lung cancer.

Said to be the first of its kind in South Texas, the institute has been developed to provide a multi-disciplinary collaboration of area physicians and health care resources, and a navigated programme for the treatment of lung disease and lung cancer patients.

Baptist Health System said the new institute would work collaboratively with St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital, bringing together pulmonologists, oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, and primary care physicians to provide highly coordinated lung cancer treatment.

"With one phone call into the programme, high-risk patients are referred to a host of treatment resources."

St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital president John Knox said the navigation aspect of the programme is key, in which the South Texas Lung Institute is the first to offer this type of service.

"With one phone call into the programme, high-risk patients are referred to a host of treatment resources," Knox added.

According to Baptist Health System, the institute’s patient navigator guides high-risk patients through the screening process and their entire treatment working with the patient’s specialists and primary care physician to suggest the next steps of care as needed.

The programme is said to be based on guidelines set by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
