OhioHealth Van Wert Hospital in the US has upgraded its medical record system through the deployment of CareConnect, with a $12m investment.

The CareConnect system, which became operational on 24 March 2024, is designed to centralise patient records and improve communication within clinical teams.

It is powered by Epic and offers a unified patient record to facilitate better communication between healthcare providers.

According to OhioHealth Van Wert Hospital, this integration aims to enhance the patient experience by simplifying access to personal medical records.

With the implementation of CareConnect, patients can now utilise the MyChart app and website to manage their healthcare needs, including appointments, test results, billing information, among others key details.

Furthermore, the new platform will allow the hospital’s physicians to track results more efficiently.

OhioHealth Van Wert Hospital Clinical Affairs associate vice president Scott Jarvis said: “From the physician and staff perspective, I feel that CareConnect is a much more robust and complete version of Epic, which allows for better documentation and communication with patients through MyChart.

“This will facilitate better patient care and allow for timeliness with annual screening reminders. It will also allow patients to schedule themselves over the computer rather than the current method of placing a phone call.”

Prior to the launch of CareConnect, MyChart was used by OhioHealth Van Wert Hospital patients for accessing test results and messaging providers. However, it did not support appointment scheduling or account payments.

The new system expands its functionality, enabling patients to schedule appointments, attend virtual consultations, and settle medical bills all in one platform.

OhioHealth MyChart is a free and secure tool for patients to control their healthcare, stated the hospital.

Accessible online at mychart.ohiohealth.com or through the OhioHealth app, MyChart also offers the traditional option for patients to request medical records in person at hospital registration desks.

The introduction of CareConnect at Van Wert Hospital marks the latest advancement for OhioHealth, as it joins the network of 15 hospitals within the organisation that have transitioned to this integrated system.
