Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) Government has appointed a project team for the planning and design of a new mental health facility on the Maitland Hospital campus.
This project team, chosen after the completion of a competitive tender process, comprises Bates Smart for architectural design, as well as MBM as the cost manager and Turner and Townsend as the project manager for the new facility.
The early planning stages are currently in motion, with the master plan and concept design for the facility anticipated to be ready by the middle of this year.
Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation facility is being developed to provide rehabilitation models of mental health care which will include both general and forensic services, aiming to provide comprehensive and expert care for local communities.
Integration of the new mental health facility with the existing Maitland Hospital is expected to offer improved support for individuals seeking concurrent mental and physical health treatment.
Additionally, the project will involve transferring some services from Morisset Hospital campus to the new Maitland facility upon completion, providing a more modern therapeutic environment.

The latest initiative to open a new mental health facility is a collaborative effort between Health Infrastructure and Hunter New England Local Health District.
It is part of the NSW government’s A$700m ($459.6m) Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Programme.
NSW Mental Health Minister Rose Jackson said: “This project milestone brings us one step closer to delivering this crucial support for the Maitland community.
“There will be more opportunities for staff, clinicians, people with lived experience of mental health and the broader community to have input on shaping the new facility as the project progresses. This is crucial to ensuring it can best meet the needs of communities across the region.”
