Roper St. Francis Healthcare has announced plans to invest $1bn to build a new Roper Hospital Medical Campus in North Charleston, a city in South Carolina, US.
Occupying 27-acres near Interstates 26 and 526, the campus will be easily accessible for patients living in Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester counties.
Roper St. Francis Healthcare CEO Dr. Jeffrey DiLisi said: “This new medical campus will be a paradigm for providing healthcare, whether that’s complex surgeries in a hospital or an annual checkup in an outpatient office.
“We made the bold decision one year ago to move Roper Hospital, and I’m grateful to our North Charleston partners for breathing life into this dream. This new campus will ensure our ability to continue delivering the quality care that’s been the hallmark of our brand for generations.”
The new Roper Hospital Medical Campus is expected to feature a full-service acute care hospital with a 24-hour emergency room.
It will also have a medical office building with a host of outpatient and specialty care services.
To build the campus, Roper St. Francis Healthcare has secured six real estate parcels near North Charleston City Hall.
In November last year, Dr. DiLisi announced a roadmap for the next ten years for the Lowcountry’s healthcare system for adults.
Among the five important initiatives of the Roper St. Francis Healthcare 2030 plan include expanding Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital and offering additional healthcare services in populated and expanding communities.
This new campus will be the fourth location for Roper Hospital since it opened in 1856.
Construction is likely to take up to five years, and until then, Roper St. Francis Healthcare will continue to provide services on the Charleston peninsula.
In North Charleston, Roper St. Francis Healthcare has been operating the Roper Hospital Diagnostics & ER – Northwoods, in addition to two Express Care locations and the Greer Transitions Clinic.
Roper St. Francis Healthcare appointed E4H Environments for Health Architecture and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to design the new medical campus.
Roper St. Francis Healthcare features four flagship hospitals – Roper Hospital, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital and Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital. Roper St. Francis Healthcare’s 657-bed system consists of more than 117 facilities and services across five counties of North Charleston.
