Healthcare company Solventum has introduced the Attest eBowie-Dick Test System, an electronic test card and auto-reader intended for sterilisation testing.

This innovation, which removes the requirement for visual result interpretation and manual record-keeping, is designed to streamline the process of sterilisation testing in hospitals by providing definitive digital results.

The eBowie-Dick System simplifies the testing procedure by delivering results in under five seconds through a clear ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ digital display.

This creates an automated record that can be integrated into a hospital’s instrument tracking system, thereby eliminating the necessity for manual scanning of analogue test results.

Traditional sterilisation tests involve colour-changing ink indicators to assess the removal of air and to detect leaks in steam dynamic-air removal sterilisers.

However, these tests produce significant paper waste as the ink indicator, encased in a paper packet, is discarded post-evaluation.

The eBowie-Dick System reduces paper waste generated from Bowie-Dick tests in a hospital’s waste stream by 94% compared to the traditional Bowie-Dick Test Packs.

Solventum Medical Surgical executive vice-president and group president Chris Barry said: “Our new eBowie-Dick System revolutionises sterilisation testing by reducing processing times and eliminating the variability inherent to traditional methods. The device’s software capabilities provide advanced analytics not possible with today’s tests.

“Through digitisation, Solventum is saving sterilisation assurance professionals time and reducing waste to help create a more sustainable future.”

The system is now available in the US through authorised distribution partners, with a global rollout planned throughout this year.
