China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) in Taiwan has collaborated with Microsoft Taiwan to introduce a GenAI medical record system in Mandarin, in what is claimed to be a world first.

The Generative Healthcare Intelligent (gHi) System is referred to as the ‘Mandarin version of Nuance applications’.

Nuance is a Microsoft subsidiary specialising in conversational AI and ambient intelligence technology to help in mitigating the burden of clinical documentation.

The gHi system is designed to capture verbal input from healthcare professionals and convert it into accurate medical records using its advanced AI engine.

Supported by Microsoft Azure’s GPT-4, the new system enables the recording of medical information through speech, streamlining the documentation process.

The technology summarises and analyses text, while also generating medical terminology and recommendations from key information.

With a focus on continuous improvement, gHi aims to broaden its healthcare services, prioritising patient-centric care to enhance the overall quality of medical treatment.

CMUH superintendent Der-Yang Cho emphasised the inefficiencies and errors associated with traditional medical record management, which often involves cumbersome paperwork or manual input.

The gHi system addresses these challenges by allowing medical professionals to complete records through voice recording, significantly improving the accuracy of medical record maintenance.

One of the most notable benefits of the gHi system is its potential to lower the time spent on medical records’ maintenance by up to 75% as against conventional methods, claims CMUH.

Microsoft Taiwan general manager Sean Pien said: “Microsoft Azure is a versatile platform, including enterprise-level computing capabilities, great variety in machine learning service solutions, multiple programming languages and tools, the powerful summarisation and generation abilities of Azure OpenAI, and extensive resources of global data centres. All of these can ensure the accuracy and stability of ‘gHi System’ constructed by CMUH.”
