The University Hospital Halle (Saale) in Germany has selected ViewRay‘s MRIdian MRI-guided radiation therapy system to expand advanced radiation therapy treatment services.

The University hospital has installed the system at its Krukenberg Cancer Center in Southern Saxony-Anhalt.

This system is said to be the first MRI-guided radiation therapy system at Krukenberg Cancer Center.

Through diagnostic-quality MR images, the system provides anatomical visualisation to oncologists.

It can also adapt a radiation therapy plan to the targeted cancer.

The system helps in avoiding unnecessary radiation exposure of organs-at-risk as well as healthy tissue.

It provides real-time tracking of the target and organs-at-risk and allows automatic gating of the radiation beam if the target moves outside the user-defined margins.

The system allows physicians to provide prescribed dose to the target and helps in reducing toxicities that are associated with conventional radiation therapy.

The hospital plans to use the MRI-guided radiation therapy system to provide stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) treatments for abdominal and pelvic tumours including prostate, pancreatic, liver, central lung tumours, and gynecologic tumours.

ViewRay chief medical officer Martin Fuss said: “We are excited to welcome University Hospital Halle (Saale) to the global community of centers adopting MRIdian to offer personalised treatment to a broader population of cancer patients, including those who were previously considered untreatable.

“University Hospital Halle has a reputation for offering the most innovative treatment options available.

“The addition of MRIdian MRI-guided radiation therapy further advances their position as a leader in cancer care.”

The company stated that 48 MRIdian systems are now installed at hospitals worldwide and are used for the treatment of a range of solid tumours.
