Early construction works have begun on the expansion of Prince Albert Victoria Hospital in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Led by PCL Construction Management, the design early works phase includes geotechnical drilling, utility work, and the construction of a new parking lot.
The project also involves designing a new acute care tower and current facility upgrades.
Health Minister Paul Merriman said: “Construction of the parking lot is an important first step towards building the new Victoria Hospital.
“Our government is proud of the collaborative working relationship with Prince Albert Grand Council, and other local leaderships, as we make investment into a facility that will better support the needs of a growing community and surrounding area.”
Upon completion of the project, the hospital’s bed capacity will increase by up to 40%, going from 173 to 242 beds, with plans for further expansion.
During construction, the project plans to minimise disruptions and offer alternative parking for employees and visitors.
To execute the project, Prince Albert Grand Council is collaborating with the government and the Saskatchewan Health Authority, and offering feedback on the facility’s design.
PCL will engage with local and indigenous businesses and trades during the construction phase.
Saskatchewan Health Authority chief operating officer Derek Miller said: “As work moves forward on the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, staff, patients, and families will begin to notice changes at the hospital site.
“These changes signify the progress of the project, which will expand services for Prince Albert and the surrounding area, and our commitment to the public to deliver quality care close to home.”
