Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH) NHS Foundation Trust has announced plans for the construction of an urgent and emergency care facility at Arrowe Park Hospital with $37.3m (£28m) investment.

The plan will include a complete redevelopment of the existing accident and emergency (A&E) area at the hospital, which is managed by Wirral University Teaching Hospital and the Urgent Treatment Centre.

WUTH chief executive Janelle Holmes said: “This will be a fantastic facility for staff and patients and the work will completely transform Wirral’s only Emergency Department and also the provision of urgent care for local people.

“This is the biggest investment at Arrowe Park Hospital since it was built almost 40 years ago and shows our commitment to enhancing the care, we provide to those who are in most urgent need.

“It is another example of strong partnerships, working with health and care organisations across Wirral which are continuing to work together for the benefit of people in the community.”

Construction works at the site are expected to begin by mid-2022, and the new urgent care and A&E facility is slated to open in March 2024.

For executing the construction works, the Trust has selected Tilbury Douglas as the primary construction and engineering contractor, and Day Architectural for creating designs.

Once completed, the new urgent care and emergency department will have a single entrance point, and alignments will be made to reconfigure emergency department and urgent treatment centre into one space.

This will create additional space to maintain social distancing and also improve access for ambulances.

The new facilities are said to offer most clinically effective care for urgent and emergency patients.

Additionally, the scheme is said to be part of the NHS Long-Term plan to offer 24-hour collaborative urgent care service.
