Wyong Hospital has received $500,000 in funding from the New South Wales (NSW) Government in Australia to complete two work projects aimed at enhancing patient and staff experiences.
The funding will be used to create a sensory garden outside the hospital’s acute geriatric ward and renovate the Louisiana House.
The sensory garden will be located outside ward 2C, providing care for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Central Coast minister David Harris said: “The presence of gardens and greenery in our health facilities, as well as providing patients with easy access to fresh air, sunlight and natural light, significantly improve patient wellbeing. This includes reduced recovery times, the lifting of mood and decreased anxiety in patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
“Integrating these therapeutic elements into Wyong Hospital will help provide a calming and supportive environment that promotes healing and comfort for patients while also improving the experience of their caregivers and the hospital’s dedicated staff.”
The garden will be designed to be accessible for aged patients with reduced mobility, featuring raised garden beds, accessible paths, seating, and a nurse call system for safety.

In addition to the garden, Louisiana House renovations will encompass roof replacement, bathroom and laundry upgrades, and external landscaping.
These improvements aim to provide modern accommodation for medical staff, aiding in staff retention and attraction.
Regional health minister Ryan Park said: “The NSW government is committed to investing in health infrastructure to support better health outcomes for rural and regional communities.
“The Rural Minor Works Programme will enable the Central Coast Local Health District to upgrade equipment and health facilities to enhance the working environment for health staff and improve patient experiences.
“Having modern, fit-for-purpose accommodation available will also support Central Coast Local Health District in attracting and retaining key clinical staff to Wyong Hospital, helping to improve health outcomes for the local community.
“The programme is one of several investments our government is making to strengthen rural and regional health services, so people have access to the best possible care close to home.”
