Atrium Health has begun construction of a 12-storey care facility at its Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center campus, Blythe Road, near uptown Charlotte in the US.

This 1.1 million square feet site will feature 448 rooms for patients admission, 38 operating rooms, and 16 procedure rooms.

The patient rooms will have built-in capabilities to incorporate new technologies in the future.

This facility will also have a pod-style emergency unit, with 62 examination rooms and a helipad.

For the nursing departments on the inpatient floors, an open core approach will be deployed to promote teamwork, as well as to expand access into the rooms of the patients.

Scheduled to be functional in 2027, this project is part of an upgrade of Atrium Health’s facilities in the region.

On completion, the new building will be connected to Atrium Health Carolinas Rehabilitation’s Dickson tower and the David L. Conlan Center.

Atrium Health central area vice-president and chief medical officer Dr Dan Handel said: “This new expansion to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center will tremendously improve both the patient and caregiver experience inside its walls.

“Equipped with the latest, state-of-the-art technology, patients and providers will re-discover why Atrium Health is the best place to give and to receive high-quality care for years to come.”

Earlier this year, Atrium Health broke ground on a new hospital, Atrium Health Lake Norman, in Cornelius, North Carolina.
