Beaufort Memorial starts site work on emergency and urgent care facility in US

The forthcoming facility will provide on-site diagnostic equipment and laboratory services.

Beaufort Memorial Hospital has initiated site works on its new Emergency & Urgent Care centre, set to be constructed on the southern part of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, US.

Situated along William Hilton Parkway, the forthcoming facility is designed to operate round-the-clock and will be staffed by emergency-trained, board-certified physicians and nurses.

The demolition of a pre-existing building started at the location last month and completion of the construction is targeted for 2026.

The centre is said to address a broad spectrum of medical issues, ranging from serious emergencies involving potentially life- or limb-threatening conditions to less critical ailments that still necessitate immediate attention.

Those requiring ongoing hospitalisation after initial stabilisation will be transferred to other hospitals equipped with inpatient services.

The facility is being developed to provide patients with continual access to both urgent and emergency care without needing an appointment.

Its approach allows individuals to be billed solely based on the level of service they require and is expected to offer shorter wait times than traditional emergency rooms.

On-site diagnostic equipment and laboratory services will also be accessible for prompt assessment and treatment.

Beaufort Memorial president and CEO Russell Baxley said: “Beaufort Memorial is staying true to its promise to expand access and grow healthcare services in southern Beaufort County.

“This combination emergency and urgent care facility is a huge milestone, providing an innovative, patient-centred approach to deliver healthcare on Hilton Head Island.”

In January 2025, Beaufort Memorial revealed a collaboration with US-based Intuitive Health and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Health to bring this facility to the community.

In June, Intuitive Health, in partnership with Beaufort Memorial Hospital, MUSC, and Tidelands Health, shared plans to open multiple emergency and urgent care centres throughout South Carolina.
