Australia's New South Wales (NSW) Government has announced the commencement of construction on a new palliative care unit at Nepean Hospital in Australia, following the appointment of CPB Contractors for the works.
CPB Contractors, which is also delivering the over A$1bn ($655.5m) Nepean Hospital Redevelopment, will build the unit as an integrated fit out within the new Stage 2 building.
The palliative care unit forms part of the Minns Labor Government’s A$93m world-class end of life care programme, which aims to deliver new and upgraded palliative care facilities at several hospitals in the state.
Staff at the new unit will provide specialist care, supporting the dignity, privacy and comfort of people with life-limiting illnesses who have complex needs.
Located on the top floor of the Stage 2 building, the unit will offer family-focused shared spaces, double and large single bedrooms with ensuites, and a rooftop courtyard.
Works on the palliative care unit will proceed alongside the Nepean Hospital Stage 2 building, which recently topped out.
Construction on this building is scheduled for completion in late 2026, with opening set to take place after operational commissioning.
The redevelopment will expand health services and facilities in the region, including new staff training facilities, clinical support services, medical imaging, additional inpatient beds, and a new intensive care unit for adults.
NSW health minister Ryan Park said: “The Minns government is committed to ensuring people with life-limiting illnesses can receive quality end-of-life care close to home.
“This contractor appointment is a significant milestone for the project, bringing us a step closer to delivering enhanced palliative care facilities for those living in the Nepean and Blue Mountains area.”
Earlier this month, the NSW government initiated a public consultation regarding the redevelopment of Glen Innes Hospital, with the review of environmental factors made available for community input.
