Princess Royal Hospital’s care hub on track to provide patient care

The hub will transform patient care by providing day case surgery for patients in Shropshire, Telford, Wrekin, and mid Wales.

July 03 2023

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust in the UK has announced that construction for a new £24m ($30.47m) planned care hub at Princess Royal Hospital in Telford is progressing well.

The two-storey hub, featuring four modern theatres, recovery areas, and patient consultation pods, aims to transform patient care by providing day case surgery for patients across Shropshire, Telford, Wrekin, and mid-Wales.

It will increase the number of day case operations, leading to shorter waiting times and improved services for specialities such as ear, nose, and throat procedures, orthopaedics, gynaecology, and general surgery, among others.

The project is said to be part of the Hospitals Transformation Programme, which seeks to enhance health and care for communities in the region.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust Surgery, Anaesthetics and Cancer divisional medical director and Hospitals Transformation Programme Planned Care clinical lead Dr Steve McKew said: “This fantastic investment in the hospital site at Telford will transform how we deliver our day surgery benefiting patients from across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and mid-Wales.

“Day case procedures will be able to take place all year round, despite seasonal pressures, which is great news for our patients who won’t have to wait as long for their operation.

“We are looking forward to welcoming our very first patients next year.”

The facility has been designed with The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust clinicians’ input.
