Reston Hospital Center, a part of US-based healthcare network HCA Virginia, has opened an inpatient unit at its main hospital to expand its range of cancer care services.

The eight new inpatient rooms are intended to improve the quality of care for patients receiving cancer treatment.

Patients in the new unit will receive personalised care from a team of nurses specially trained in cancer care.

The team comprises social workers, navigators and nursing staff who will work with the physical therapy, rehabilitation, imaging and pharmacy teams to offer a multi-disciplinary approach to inpatient treatment.

Reston Hospital Center chief nursing officer Laura-Anne Cleveland said: “This new space is the first step in our plans to expand our oncology service line.

“Our goal is to continuously evolve and align our resources to provide the highest level of clinical care, support and expertise that patients and providers have come to expect at Reston Hospital Center.”

The inpatient unit's establishment is the first phase of Reston Hospital Center’s oncology programme expansion plan, with subsequent phases due to focus on cancer research and the CAR-T immunotherapy programme.

The hospital's existing oncology services, including outpatient infusion, radiation therapy, the Women’s Imaging Center and Medical Imaging Center, will be available for patients.

Other services offered at the facility include oncology navigation, oncology social work, support groups, physical and occupational therapy, and nutrition support.

Reston Hospital Center associate chief nursing officer Becki Lawhorne said: “We look forward to making Reston Cancer Care Services a sought-after location for excellence in comprehensive cancer treatment.

“Our future growth plans for the cancer programme highlight how HCA Virginia and Reston Hospital Center understand the care our community needs and work tirelessly to meet those needs.”

Reston Hospital Center's oncology programme is accredited by the American College of Radiology, the Commission on Cancer and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.
