The project is a pivotal component of NYC Health + Hospitals' Climate Resilience Plan.

STV, in partnership with municipal health system NYC Health + Hospitals, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and community members, has announced the completion of the Metropolitan Hospital Floodwall Resilience Project in East Harlem, US.

This project is a pivotal component of NYC Health + Hospitals' Climate Resilience Plan, which aims to protect healthcare infrastructure against extreme weather events like Superstorm Sandy.

Since 2016, STV has been the programme manager for a $1.7bn capital construction programme, enhancing resilience at four NYC Health + Hospitals facilities, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital.

The Metropolitan Hospital now features a flood protection system, designed and managed by STV.

The flood wall and storm water detention tank system is capable of withstanding rising flood levels and safeguarding vital hospital infrastructure.

Additionally, the project included electrical systems and pre-connections for essential services in anticipation of severe weather conditions.

STV senior project manager Andrew Eckl said: “New Yorkers’ health depends on implementing critical stormwater infrastructure, so hospitals can keep staff and patients safe while continuing to serve the community.

“By integrating sustainable and resilient solutions, we’re addressing current needs while preparing the community for the future.”

The new floodwalls, ranging from eight to 12 foot high, are engineered to protect the hospital from an extreme storm event.

The floodgates, some extending up to 45 feet, are a testament to the project's scale and the hospital's preparedness for future flooding.

Beyond infrastructure, the project has also improved the hospital's public spaces, introducing a picnic area and new seating, enhancing the environment for both staff and patients.

STV's expertise in healthcare extends beyond flood protection, offering comprehensive services in programming, architectural and engineering design, and project management.
